Wines Made from the Crawford Beck Vineyard Winegrapes

The winegrapes grown at CBV are divided up into blocks for the ease of tracking varietals, farming practices, weather and micro-terroir, and purchase contracts.  CBV grapes are currently sold to three premium wineries in the Willamette Valley.  CBV winegrapes can be found in wines by the following winemakers:

Owen Roe, St. Paul, Oregon

Owen Roe 2006 Pinot Noir “Eola-Amity Hills”

The predominately Jory soils in the Eola-Amity Hills are very well-drained and volcanic in origin.  These small mountains in the heart of the Willamette Valley can gather greater heat units than the surrounding Pinot Noir sites.  What makes this area truly unique is the tremendous cooling breezes that channel through the Coastal Range which create great diurnal temperature swings.  A result of the heat is darker fruited wine than those of the same soils in the Dundee Hills.  The long cool evenings impart fruit vibrancy, acidity, and spice.  The 2006 vintage has turned out Pinot Noirs with massive weight and plenty of flavor.  This wine is our richest Pinot Noir of the vintage.   A majority of the fruit was farmed attentively by David and Jeanne Beck from their eponymous Crawford-Beck Vineyard.  Their bowl-shaped vineyard is located near Amity and lies atop a ridge with the Pinot Noir vines fanned across each of the slopes.  The remainder is comprised of Eola Springs Vineyard, located farther south in the heart of the Eola Hills.  Denny Peseau and Jim Thomas have farmed their gorgeous vineyard for over twenty years and we are very fortunate to be the recipients of Pinot Noir with more mature characteristics.

2007 Pinot Gris “Crawford Beck Vineyard”

This vineyard designate wine was only made in 2001, 2002, and now 2007.  Each of these vintages were cooler, yielding rich, complex, and textural wines.  It is sourced entirely from a 1.2 acre block on top of the hillside.  The soils here are a convergence of volcanic and sedimentary soils and impart exceptional fruit flavors bursting with guava and pear.  Its texture is oily and rich, and is loaded with great minerality.  Throw this in a blind tasting of great Alsatian whites – we did and were pleased with the outcome.

2008 Pinot Gris “Crawford Beck Vineyard”

The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Crawford Beck Vineyard, a 1.2 acre block located in the Eola Amity Hills near Amity, Oregon. The long, mild, indian summer of 2008 allowed these volcanic and sedimentary soils to produce fruit with exceptionally beautiful and complex aromatics, while preserving high acidity. This wine is bursting with guava and pear. It has a golden combination of rich mouth feel with a crisp finish loaded with great minerality. A superlative wine already, the acidity will allow it to age a good ten to 15 years.

Seven of Hearts Wines from Luminous Hills, McMinnville, Oregon

2007 Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills Crawford Beck Vineyard

The Crawford Beck Vineyard is a cooler site with Saum soils near Amity at the northern end of the Eola-Amity Hills appellation.   Classic dark fruit characteristics drive this wine, accompanied by layers of texture that is a function of the immaculate care of the vineyard as well as lengthy hang time the vineyard demands and rewards one for. Superbly structured, with highly satifying mouthfeel, this wine promises long aging potential and great heights as it matures.
