Weather Monitoring and Reporting at the Crawford Beck Vineyard

The topographical configuration of the vineyards at CBV includes a swale between two hills, a range in altitude between 387 and 521 feet above sea level, and slopes ranging from southerly to slightly northwesterly.  The swale functions as a funnel for the Van Duzer breezes.  All of this variation, plus the diversity of the soil types, produces a vineyard with an interesting and complex range of terroirs.  One of the most important features of understanding the CBV terroir is monitoring the weather.  This allows us to understand the condition of the grape vines, the grapes, and the fungal pests that may emerge under the right conditions.

CBV maintains a weather reporting system based on equipment provided by Davis Instruments and eKoView from Crossbow Technologies.  The system includes six temperature probes throughout the vineyard and detectors for soil moisture and soil temperature at three sites, leaf wetness, rainfall and wind speed and direction.  Some of the data produced by this system are reported and continuously updated here.  Detailed historical data are available on request.
